Gluesticks

Accidentally left plastic bag on stove top and did not know stove-top was on..?

I went out to get the mail ..gone for a few minutes or so and came back in to a very strong burning smell. I went to kitchen and noticed a plastic bag was on the stovetop (inside the bag was a hot glue gun with glue) that was already melting. The fumes were bad. I immediately opened all windows and doors and turned on fans. I left them opened for several hours. With me inhaling the white smoke...how bad is it for me? Will I and the kids be OK to sleep tonight? Are carbon monoxide detector did not go off or are smoke detector. The fire department came. I called them just to ask them how to get rid of the white haze in the air..by the time they arrived it was almost away. Should I be nervous falling asleep and would it have caused me any health damage for that quick of a time? Thanks for your answers. Thank you so far for your quick replies. This happened around 3:00 PM. I left windows opened for several hours. I don't smell the horrible smell anymore. The fire depart. said all should be OK. I did get it off (all of it ) with cleaning supplies and a razor. I was just worried..that now that it is time to go to bed..and I don't think I can smell it anymore..would I be OK. I never did get any headaches at all.

  1. I think you should be OK as long as there is not super strong fumes that make it hard for you to breath. If there is, consider renting or using fans to vent out that part of the house.
  2. im thinking no. its just a burnt plastic bag i dont see what harm it could cause. i would definitely turn the ventilation fans on if you have them usually found on the microwave
  3. It should be OK but to be on the safe side you can call the hospital and ask them you can also call the red cross they may have some one in the area to swing by and check it out for you. they really like it when your alive and ask before your not. they will ask what the fire department said and may want to contact the department that responded so give your name and address to them. Also neighbors close by are any of them friendly with you. ask for there opinion ask them over to check it out with you they want to see you in the morning as well. Luck.
  4. If you experience any headaches or nausea after inhaling smoke you should seek medical assistance. However, you probably would have reacted already to the toxic chemicals that were released when the plastic melted so you should be OK. Clean the stove top well before using it again. Use a hair dryer to soften the hot glue that is now melted on your stove and scrape it off with an old credit card or plastic putty knife. The bag will be the hardest part to get off. You may need to use a razor blade to lightly scrape it off.
  5. Brief exposure to these fumes should not cause you or your children any harm. You aired out the house and stopped the cause of the smoke immediately and called the fire department, you did everything right. You aired the house out completely and cleaned the areas affected. The more important issue is of course, taking extreme care not to do things like this again. Make sure that when you finish cooking, you make sure all burners are off and even when an oven or stove is cold, never, and I do mean never place anything on the burners or stove top without checking to make sure that all burners are not only off, but cold. Air out your house again tomorrow for a few hours and vacuum, dust, wipe down kitchen surfaces for trace amounts of smoky residue, but you should be fine.
