Gluesticks

Is it safe to use a hotglue gun to isolate two wires?

So soldered a new plug to one of my laptop power cord and parts of the two wires are still kinda expose, my pops is telling me to pour hot glue below the plug to isolate the two wires, but i don't know...is hot glue conductive in anyway?is there a chance of melting? I'm dealing with 12v here

  1. There is no problem with using hot glue as an insulator. In fact, it is even used in cheap consumer electronics to hold connectors (MOLEX, etc.) to their sockets on a circuit board. These connectors generally also have exposed conductors. I've used hot glue in place of solder in tight situations fixing audio and 110v power cables. You're not going to be pulling enough current to generate enough heat to melt the hot glue.
  2. Hot melt is a HORRIBLE KLUDGE! It might work for a while, but why not just use heat shrink tube like a normal person?
  3. Can it? Yes. Should it....Ummmm, well depends on if you use the screwdriver for a pry bar and the channel locks for a hammer... I would think crimp connectors with the jacket, electrical tape, or if it is not accessible they have liquid electrical tape at most hardware stores and home centers.
