Can concrete block out toxic gasses?
I have installed a new carpet few days ago, but i did not like the fume that the capet glue gave off. I removed the carpet glue.(we used adhesive remover, WD-40 to clean it), but the toxic fume will not go away. So i decided to cover the concrete floor with another layer of concrete. my question is that will the concrete block out all the toxic gases? Many thanks in advance

- The oder may be coming from the new carpet. It is a common complaint of homeowners that have moved into a new home or put in new carpet that they are smelling an organic chemical oder. This is the chemical that is used to extrude the man made fibers of the carpet and the easiest way to get rid of it is to open the window and let the fan blow enough air over it to make it evaporate and be carried outside. But a little of the chemical goes a long way. The adhesive will have an MSDS sheet that you can get from that website or you can call the company that made the adhesive to check on what is in the glue. I don't know why you would want to glue the carpet to the floor. It is usually just held in place by nail boards that you place near the wall to keep it down. You want it to move a little on the floor, unless you have some special purpose for it. If it still smells after you have put down the concrete it is probably not the floor that smells. You can put cement sealer on the concrete to keep it from smelling, but over time, maybe centuries, the chemical will work its way through the cement also. I use to work for the EPA in their toxics section and it was rare for a week to go by when someone didn't call about this problem. If you need more help then contact me and I'll see what I can tell you.
