Gluesticks

What is the best way to remove super glue from a camera lens?

Recently a rim had become detached from one of my camera lenses, a friend of mine claimed to have experience of fixing this problem. Using a small amount of super glue they did indeed reattach the rim unfortunately though, the glue seems to have spread out and left a white film on parts of the lens. I applied standard lens cleaning fluid which was partially successful but there is still some residue, so does anyone know of a good method to remove this completely, without damaging the lens? Thanks

  1. You can get all sorts of solvents in DIY shops, but if you have any nail polish remover at home, you can try dipping a cottonwool bud in it, and trying it (gingerly!) on the lens. It might work. I've managed to get superglue off my fingers with it!
  2. you need to use after shave and warm water separately and rub on the superglue gently to avoiud damage to your camera lens,
  3. You might get it off with repeated rubbing but you'll wear off the lens coating first. I'd say the lens is stuffed. If it's a good lens then see about sending it back to the manufacturer. Both Canon and Nikon (and other mfrs I'm sure) will accept your lens and quote you for its repair before starting any work - Nikon charges about £20 for the inspection - and will dispose of the lens for you if you decide it's beyond economic repair so you don't pay postage to receive back a useless item.
  4. Super glue manufacturers usually make a solvent/remover. Apparently acetone (nail varnish remover) also works, but not sure about the effect it would have on your lens.
  5. The only thing I know to remove it is acetone. Put a little on a soft cloth or a cotton bud (better) and continually rub it until is disappears. It takes a while, but it will work. Be extremely careful, do not touch and plastic parts with it or the plastic will begin to dissolve. Do not press hard to avoid scratching the lens. If your lens is coated, it may remove the coating. Before you try, have a look on this site http://www.ehow.com/search.aspx?s=remove+superglue&Options=0&x=32&y=13
  6. Don't worry about it and use your lens as you did before. You'll get very slight softness if there's a big spot on the surface of the optics. If however the only the body is affected then not even that softness will come !
  7. Using any solvent on a camera lens is highly inadvisable. They have a coating which is there for good reason and you will probably remove it with the solvent. I recommend taking it to a professional.
  8. Let this be a reference for the future that contact adhesive is problematic to remove. If you do require to glue stuff mask off areas first, then use epoxy resin.
