Can I lay ceramic tiles over the remnants of vinyl (black) glue?

I removed the vinyl carpet in my laundry room but there is some backing stuck to the floor which is very hard and dense in a section .I used a chemical remover and scraped for many hours but to no avail.Should I be ok laying ceramics over it.I will need to even out the floor though.

  1. Laying tile over old adhesive that is firmly adheared to the floor is usually not a problem. I have done this many times.
  2. As long as its down well like you say you can easily do it. There are just 2 main concerns to think about. Use a stronger thin set than normal and stay off the tile an extra day or two. This is because the old glue has sealed the cement pores and the thin set isn t absorbed into the cement . I m assuming this is over a slab any way. Other wise you need to add the proper substrate to meet tile codes for properly doing ceramic tile. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar and check my qualifications there. GL
