Gluesticks

my kid eats playdoh and glue sticks?

I'm a SAHM and I watch my kid like a hawk. She's 3 and a half and she loves to eat glue stick and playdoh. She will hide and try to eat some and I immediately take it out of her mouth. I'm wondering if I should contact her doctor about it. She adores arts and crafts and it would be a shame not to be able to play them anymore but I just might have to. Any ideas? My kid isn't retarded. Thanks a lot.

  1. i wouldn't have anymore playdoh or glue sticks in my house. i'm sure they are both safe considering kids use them.
  2. i know that theres eddible playdough that you can make... so at least if she eats that it wont hurt her.. you can just google that for the recipe but for the glue sticks i really have no idea... maybe try using tape.
  3. give her jellies. try more tough variations later on when she will be fond of them.
  4. hahaha......mine used to eat crayons! I think it is just a phase, maybe she likes the texture of it on her tongue or the saltiness or something. I would hold off on calling the doctor just yet, most little kids go through something like this, just keep them put up for awhile, or make sure that she only uses them in a supervised setting. Tell her when she puts them in her mouth that she will not be able to use them/play with them if she keeps putting them in her mouth.
  5. Why do you think they are made non-toxic these days...because shes not the first one to eat it and she won't be the last!! My daughter sticks her toes in her mouth...i would rather her eat playdoh...Good Luck!!!!
  6. Playdoh isn't so bad, but glue sticks are BAD. I would tell her if she can't stop eating them then they will be taken away.
  7. most glue sticks [elmer's] & playdoh are nontoxic but i would consult your doctor if you're seriously concerned.
  8. Just make sure she doesn't actually swallow any of it, although I believe playdoh is non-toxic now.
  9. The salty earthy taste of PlayDoh remains one of my favorite memories of childhood. I can completely understand the urge to eat it. No worries, PlayDoh is not toxic. However, if she eats a whole lot of it, she could be risking a bowel obstruction. I mean a whole LOT. Otherwise, it's not a major problem. She'll grow out of it, and move on to other ways of investigating the world. Sounds like she's a normal healthy girl, with great taste! ;)
  10. make up a crazy story and tell her the next time she eats them she will ???????????????????? and maby it will scare her out of wanting to eat them???? EDIT:: OPPS I DIDNT MEAN TO GIVE CARLO A A THUMBS UP I MENT TO GIVE HIM A THUMBS DOWN SO IF YOU READ THIS CARLO A DOSENT HAVE A THUMBS UP FROM ME ( I DIDNT WANT PEOPLE TO THIINK SOME FREAK GAVE HIME A THUMBS UP FOR A BAD ANSWER) SORRY CARLO A :(
  11. does she eat anything else that is considered 'non' food? have you ever heard of pica? try giving her a vitamin with minerals the minerals is the important part
  12. hi i think you should just try to explain her that glue sticks and playdoh are dangerous for her if she doesn't agree then i guess the only way left is to take them away from her.. there is no point to show her to the doc because idon't think they can really help alot in this situation.. also its best if yuu just hide playdoh and glue sticks from her for a while until she forgets her habits of eating them =D hope that helped
  13. Kids do this kind of stuff its normal you should keep them away from her when not supervised and like other people said give her something that is safer to eat like candy or cheetos.
  14. Manufacturers have made pretty much anything that is labeled for children under 3 completely non-toxic. She is just exploring the craft supplies in a way that makes sense to her. The crafts are wonderful for her motor development and to stop using them would take away a valuable teaching tool. Just continue to be watchful, know that she will stop doing it when she is ready, and use this experience to teach her to explore with her other senses. Good luck!
  15. It's normal for some kids to explore things through taste. My daughter is almost 2 and always tries to put paper and rocks in her mouth. She also tries to eat crayons. I'm pretty sure that Playdough and glue come in non-toxic forms for this reason. If you are concerned, ask your pediatrician. Maybe try giving her some fruit snacks to chew on while she is using the Playdough or Glue? Or even chewing gum! That might distract her!
  16. I would ask your doctor about this it sounds like she may be deficient in minerals ,as long as they say non toxic on them they won't hurt her .I asked my doctor about excessive ice chewing once and he told it I craved ice do to a mineral deficiency.
  17. Anything that's made for babies, like paydoh and kiddie glue sticks, is supposed to be non-toxic. I loved the taste of playdoh when I was a kid and it hasn't done me any serious harm! To my horror, one of my kids ate a cigarette once. It was only one, and she was fine. Kids will eat almost anything and there are very few things that will harm them. Obviously, keep the bleach and the caustic soda under lock and key. But I think a kid can probably eat a few pounds of playdoh with no ill effects. The main problem then would be the cost of replacing it!
  18. My 2 year old dose the same thing. It's just a kid think i believe.. I make homemade play-dough, and I know there isn't anything that can hurt her.. It's just flour, salt, cream of tarter, and water... As for the glue thing I won't let my little one have it, I just have her show me what she wants glued and do it for her, but then again according to my hubby "I'm a mother hen"
  19. My son eats wood chips at the park, and loves licking rocks. I know the feeling, no matter how closely you watch they still get it in their mouths. Luckily, I think your problem might be easier to solve than mine. Get a small basket, and put it out of her reach. Every time you catch her putting something in her mouth, take down the basket and have her put it in there. Tell she can have it back in 2 days, or whatever amount of time you think is fair. It should get the message across pretty quick, as long as you don't give in. If she wants to continue using them, she won't put them in her mouth. Hope that helps!
