Does 50 glue sticks sound like alot for a kindergartener?
My son is starting school Friday and on the supply list it says to purchase 50 elmers glue sticks. I called the school and they said thats correct, but for all 15 kids in his class to bring 50 each just sounds crazy to me. At the parent/ teacher meeting over the summer, she said they would use a glue stick a week, but they dont go to school for 50 weeks. Has anyone else had to purchase a crazy number of items for school? Or is this teacher just glue crazy? I feel sorry for him on the first day having to carry all those in his bookbag, it'll look silly. She told all the parents that she will be putting all the pencils and items like that in a big bag, and when one student need a penicil they just get one out of the bag, so no fun pencils ( ones other than the plain ugly yellow ones). I have already bought the sticks, but everyone that I have told says theyve never heard of so many. I'm starting not to like this school and he hasnt even started!!

- That's ridiculous. Send him with 5 to start and let the teacher let you know when he runs out. They are probably trying to make you provide so many because some parents won't send any. That should be the school's responsibility.
- My goodness! 50 gluesticks is a ridiculous amount! My son took 2 and they still had some left over at the end of the year. I would definately query it again if I was you!!
- i have four kids and i have NEVER heard of anything like that. seems an unfair amount to request from parents, if the teacher wants to use that much glue, well it should come out of her pocket....i'd send in 5 or 6 and tell her to supply the rest.
- 50 glue sticks is way to many esp if its a public school! I wouldnt bring them on the 1st day....wait to see what other parents do. You can always bring them the next day...
- WOW! they must be doing A LOT of projects!
- I think she's glue crazy! But I do think that a child will go through more than half of that. :) I would just buy him what he needs. Take inventory weekly. That's what I would do!
- The school corp put out a school list a month ago............... I went and bought everything.............. today in the mail the teacher sends her welcome letter and REVISED list of what SHE wants......................... Half of the stuff i bought she doesnt want. Like i bough elmers school glue, she wants only the GEL glue......... She wanted 15 glue sticks for 1st grade. So needless to say i have extra supplies with her name on them....... for her to play with and do home projects........... I also had to label every crayon in the box, and all the markers. Thats alot of labeling. Yes i think 50 is excessive, however........ my daughters teacher last year was asking for things weekly so it was never ending. I didnt keep track.
- Schools don't seem to want to provide ANYTHING for students anymore. I've heard of people having toilet paper, paper towels, and hand soap on their lits. I'd bet the kindergarteners are supplying glue sticks for the entire elementary school, and that's not right. The school should be supplying all of these things. What do you pay taxes for?
- You'd be surprised how many glue sticks they'll go through. It's amazing. Either they ask for it now or they'll ask for it later. I've had to use gluesticks for a project and frankly, they just don't last for too many...especially when you have little ones using the glue. I would start him off with 10, wait for the tremendous sales RIGHT after school starts and buy the rest. Do you have orientation? That's when we take our school supplies so the kids don't have to take their items the first day of school. I'm not a teacher, but I am up at the school 30+ hours a week. I see firsthand the amount of supplies they go through - it blows your mind! But you never know - that one project they do could be the thing that makes the connection for the kids! That's what's amazing about Kinder! What I'm concerned about is this: won't they dry out by the end of school? That happens - so watch out. Maybe you could ask if she's had issues with this and if you could send in installments. I bought a whole closetful of school supplies for 80% off last year. And I'll start school with most of the needed supplies. Good luck and just make sure your child has the supplies they need to learn.
- 50 glue sticks is a bit ridiculous. I would say that unless there is nothing else on your child's school list then maybe you should comply. Otherwise, just send him with a few at first and then supply more as the school year progresses. By the way, if the children are really going through that much glue each week, then they should probably be using regular white glue, which the teacher can buy in bulk. Regular glue goes a lot further than glue sticks!
- 50 glue sticks?!?! What on earth for, snack time?!
- This is the new thing. I think its absolutely wrong. They ask parents to provide enough for the entire class for the entire year. And then yes as you say, put it in a bag. This is wrong that the parents need to supply the entire class. I would go to the next board meeting and bring this up. I would also make a complaint with the principal and board of education. We as parents should provide the supplies for OUR child. Write our names and at the end of the year, what didn't get used should be returned home!
- I don't like the communal school supplies thing. Supplies are expensive and who needs to be buying for every other kid in the class! And unless the teacher plans on feeding the kids the gluesticks, I highly doubt that 15-20 kids will use that many gluesticks. I think I have to buy TWO for my son who is starting K this fall. Put your child's name on ALL the supplies. And don't buy 50.. that's ridiculous...
- that is absolutly ridiculous. They cannot use one tube per week. Sounds like you are supplying the whole school. Tell them you are sorry but you will send one and when your son has finished it you will send in the next one
- the teachers at our school put up a wish list on post it pads on their door. with say glue sticks on one post it pencils on another a ream of paper on another and so on a parent will take one of these post its and get the item it helps the class better
- 50? 2 glue sticks will last one kid the whole year. I would call the BOE and say something.
- yes that is a lot.
- 50 glue sticks seems reasonable. I mean they have to give them snacks right? We'll be having glue sticks today, yummy! Let's all sing the thank you song to little Timmy.
- Maybe the teacher uses them to get a little high?
- Is that the *only* thing on his list? If so, I would guess that they ask each parent to buy *one* supply that will be needed by the students, but to bring enough for everyone for all year. Then, another parent brings enough crayons for everyone for all year. Another brings enough pencils. Another scissors, etc. It actually sounds like *easier* school supply shopping than the usual problem of finding 'one of this, two of that, three of the other', then they don't have what you need at this store to fill the list, so you have to go to another store... I would rather buy a lot of one thing (possibly getting a better price on it) than a little of this & a little of that. Doing it this way also helps the teacher to make sure that *every child* has everything they need. Not all families are as fortunate as we are. I don't mind helping the kids who don't have as much money as we do, or the parents who don't have as much time as we do. That's the only way that I could imagine your child needing to bring in 50 glue sticks, though. That is way too many for just one child. The bigger issue here, though, is that you need to learn to address your concerns about things like this directly to the school & ask until you understand. Your taxes *do* pay for your child's education. You have the right to be involved in the process and to understand what's going on.
- 50 glue sticks does sound like a lot. Teachers ask for a lot of stuff because some parents can't afford items. I know it's not your job to supply these kids but they do deserve a chance just like your child. Most parents get mad because they have to do it. I do it and I can't afford a lot of extras but if there's a child in the class who doesn't have everything they need it could cause problems for my child. I guess I'm wrong because everyone tells me I am but that's just the way I am. But I do think 50 is a bit much. As for him looking silly everyone else should have all that stuff too. It's only one day. I think you shouldn't worry about him looking silly as much as this hurting his back. Don't you worry about that or that he's going to look silly? As for public schools supplying the things they need you all need to go to a PTA meeting or get on the board. I was on the board, I was treasurer, fund raiser, tshirt seller and the list went on and on I spent over 200 hours at that school in class and doing other things. SCHOOLS CANNOT AFFORD TO BUY EVERY THING YOUR CHILD NEEDS. Most teachers have 50-70 dollars to buy supplies. The rest comes from their pockets. Why should THEY pay for supplies for YOUR kid? I think you need to look into your school. Fund raisers go to field trips. Schools and the district do NOT pay for field trips, they do NOT pay for when someone comes in to talk to the school [like the just say no people ect] they do NOT pay for any type of parties. NOTHING. The money alloted to the school is to pay for salaries of all the staff in the school, there's a lot of people there that you never even see. It goes to buying office supplies, nursing supplies. The PTA Buys computers, t.v.s, playground equipment. Oh, and the district has to pay for insurance.. If the class goes on a field trip it's extra insurance, if there is an assembly either during the day or at night it's extra insurance. Schools don't have an unlimited fund to pay for all this stuff. It's PUBLIC school. It's not private. You should be glad your child is educated for free. It wasn't always that way.
- I have had to buy things I thought unnessesary but 50 glue stix thats crazy you should tell her where to put those glue stix lol my son needed 2 in kindergarden and he went to a poor school that year I also use a sharpie to mark all of my sons supplies too hey I bought them he should be the one to use them right
- To think I was upset about my sons supply list. I couldn't imagine buying 50 glue sticks. There is no reason that they should need that many Kindergarteners do go through alot of glue but thats just plain stupid!.My sons class last year did the thing w/ the pencils.I just got him a pk of those plain yellow ones and got some w/ characters on them for just for him.Maybe you could do that.
- oh my god!!! my son was in kindergarten last year and his teacher only required 3 glue sticks :-( that seems a bit outrageous and i wouldn't buy that many.
- Yes that is a lot.....maybe the teacher has a glue fetish.
- you need to tell the school thats wrong!!!!!!!! what do they eat them? jk
