Gluesticks

Would like to remove carpet from a spiral staircase, any good glue removers?

  1. UGH! That's awful. It depends entirely on what type of glue or mastic was used. If it's a water-based glue, water and ammonia should take it off. If it's a petroleum based product, acetone might take care of it, as well as some paint strippers. My guess is that you've got a petroleum based product. Buy a small can of acetone from the hardware store and try it on a small spot. The glue should get gummy. This will take forever, but it comes off. Please be careful when using acetone. Not only is it extremely flammable, but the fumes are toxic and "heavy". This means the fumes will float to the lowest parts of the room/house. Use plenty of ventilation. You'll also need a putty knife and the flooring beneath the carpet will probably need to be refinished/resealed, so be prepared to do some sanding and staining if you've got hardwood beneath. If the stairs are made of unpainted metal, you've got nothing to worry about. If they're painted, especially with enamel paints, acetone is going to strip that, too. Ditto with other paint strippers. Good luck! My heart goes out to you.
