Removing Carpet Glue from linoleum?

We have a hallway in our house, where you come in the back door. They're used to be linoleum but the people before us put down carpet. They also did that in an adjoining bathroom. We removed the carpet from the bathroom, but the glue from the carpet was a nightmare to get off. We aren't worried about the stains it will leave, we are putting down linoleum tiles over it, but the glue has to come off or else it will mess up the new. We want to take up the carpet in the hallway now, so what I am wanting is something to get the glue off of the linoleum easily. Maybe something such as a home-made solvent, that involves less scrubbing. The glue remover from the stores did practically nothing, so I am looking for an alternative. Any advice is welcome, thanks. Sorry, its not foam backed, just some cheap carpet, like people use in basements and such

  1. You didn't say whether the carpet was foam back. I have a lighter! That ain't nuthin' but a scrapin' job. There are tools for that which use a sharp wide blade, and a long handle. Only damned solvent for that crap is gasoline. NO NO NO, DON'T USE THAT!
  2. Believe it or not it's plain old boiling water. Pour the boiling water on the glue and then using a putty knife just scrape it off. If you want to keep the water in place without spreading put a newspaper down first and pour boiling water onto that. Good luck
